well, we should consider changes where they make sense. I'm not sure at this point IF this one would make much sense. We found that there is an issue, but anything we can do about it will compromise something. We have to make sure we make the right decision or we will have another issue as a result.

I totally agree. I would put it like this: it shouldn't be only about wether or not to modify the size the default theme currently uses, since that would imply most probably to redefine the design to some extent; on a wider spectrum, it is about to try to not affect (not "technically", but functionally, in the usual practice) the flexibility Rockbox has to switch between themes (minimizing possible issues involved), considering the themes that are available to switch to, if that aspect is considered important. I just mentioned the current default's AA size because on this matters probably nothing should be discarded before analizing it

...It is a problem, indeed. I chose 120x120 because it felt kinda right...

...and I didn't find any comments regarding this subject before...

But to be honest, after all that's been said, I have to say that you shouldn't have to deal with this at his point, and I have to agree that maybe finding a solution via modifying cabbiev2, would cause even bigger problems, not to mention that it would  probably ruin the great look; so it is probably about minimizing what affects the "functional" switching flexibility... through information? tools?... or to leave it like that, but to do that as a concious decision.

I don't think Rockbox should consider other themes when designing or defining its default. There are hundreds, if not more, of other themes and so many different things about them. Especially in an example like this, where eventually a technical means (the resize patch) will render it a non-issue. It's just a matter of time, more than anything else.

Purely out of curiosity, since I'm under the impression it'll still be a while before we have this in main builds, how will the addition of multifont be able to help out this theme? Different fonts for the players with remote screens come to mind, for starters... has anyone who works on the theme thought much at this point about any uses of this to improve readability and aesthetic appeal, once the patch is finally merged in? I wouldn't actually expect someone to have already been thinking about it, but it came to mind as I was browsing flyspray.

well, we designed everything to use just one font. I don't really think this theme needs to use multiple fonts apart from the remote screens. I'm gonna experiment with it, anyway - just to be sure.

just read the flyspray entry of the bmp resize patch. does anybody know what's keeping this one from being commited?

I just used cabbiev2 on an ipod mini (then checked on an ipod video), and noticed that two of the battery icons seem to be shown switched. Maybe it is just meant to be like that, but for me the icon meanings are:

Battery plugged and charging (not fully charged yet):

Battery plugged and fully charged:

Battery unplugged and "fully" charged:

If this is true, then the first two icons are shown switched or inverted (at least in the ipod mini and video's versions), and since cabbiev2 is the default theme, it would be worth correcting that. If this is not true, it's just me having a weird way of interpreting icons  :) ... I mean, it is like that in different targets... no one said anything before...

you're right... the SHOULD be switched  :o. I never realized that before. The h300 version is the same. I guess most (if not all) ports have need the switch.
A good opportunity to change the %Cl line to official syntax (c is the only modifier that is supposed to be in there) as well.

Showing (graphically) when the battery is fully charged is a great feature cabbiev2 has, and only few other themes have; in fact that's how I noticed; switching those icons will make it just clearer  ;)

while I'm working on the wps files I could tweak them to use viewports as well... hope I'll be able to get all ports done next week.

just did the h300/ipod photo version..

My interpretation of the icons would have been that the one with the "plug" indicated charging was complete and the one with the "lightning flash" showed that charging was still in progress .... ???

The charging indications don't work on the 2nd Gen iPod, partly because the low level GPIO definitions haven't been set, but there's also something else that needs to be changed that I haven't figured out yet.

To me a plug would indicate "You're not charging, you're done and running on AC power" while a lightning inside the battery would indicate charging.

good point. maybe I need to come up with symbols that leave less room for interpretation?

My suggestion would be to make the "on AC power" icon not actually be a battery at all. Just a plug on its own, or with a non-battery shaped surrounding.
