no, the gigabeat version uses different icons. nearly all versions should have different icons because the gradient surrounding the icons should match the gradient of the backdrop.

btw, should the bitmaps be 16bit? rockbox can only display up to 16bit, but the 24 bit graphics look way better on the screen than real 16bit graphics.

ZincAlloy: I didn't think of that at all. That actually makes it a whole lot easier! I'm not sure about the 16 bit or 24 bit thing.

pixelma: Can you check out the naming of the whole theme itself to make sure that it's proper?

should the graphics be named ....320x240x16.bmp or ...320x240x24.bmp, since the graphics are 24 bit? they're made for 16 bit targets, though...

Wouldn't 16 bit graphics make more sense since they'll use less RAM?  I don't think theres any advantage to using 24 bit on a 16 bit screen anyway.

Is all of the other naming done properly? ZincAlloy: I think that they should be left as 320x240x16 because that's the actual screen size and it's a 16 bit screen... and I'm pretty sure that if they're left as 320x240x24 it would do no benefit and maybe it won't even compile properly?

Also, how would one find out whether or not the images are 16 or 24 bit and would 24 bit images be "accepted" because of the ram and size issued?

there is an advantage to 24 bit graphics, they look way better. the gradients are smooth. compare these:

* cabbie2.1.8.png (28.68 kB, 220x176 - viewed 207 times.)

Not all colour targets have a 24 bit screen.

The screens you're using are 16-bit. So 24-bit graphics can't actually look better on target. In fact, I'm pretty sure graphics are stored in framebuffer format once loaded to RAM (which is also 16-bit) meaning that the only advantage is really disk space.

That second png shows signs of dithering, something that could just as easily be done by the program outputting to the 16-bit file, but apparently whatever editor you use didn't dither in the same way Rockbox did.

how can I get photoshop to dither as good as rockbox?  ;D
I can reduce the bit depth to 16 bits, but ps won't let me keep the layers when doing so.
I can't find any dithering options when saving as .bmp. odd really. there MUST be options for this...

So what players have 24 bit color screens? And do 24 bit images take up more space than 16 bit images? Will we have to convert images from 24 bit to 16 bit ?

Another question so that we can move forward with all this renaming: Did I properly name everything in the ipod video default version? I need to know so that I can continue with the renaming for the other ports.

I don't even think they make portable 24 bit LCD screens.  24 bit color uses 1.5x the space of 16 bit.

We'll just have to see about all this 24 bit versus 16 bit business.

saratoga: Can you check the ipod video normal version (not unifont) to see whether or not the files are named properly?

Viewports are near.

Perhaps the default them should take advantage of them.
At least let's focus the WPS-creating community towards testing them for linuxstb.

we need to use 16 bit graphics, because rockbox has to dither 24bit graphics down to 16 bit. it's just a  matter of converting them correctly.

your renaming is ok. renaming is only about creating unique filenames for everything. adding the screen dimensions and bit depth to each file name does the trick.

no need to use them just because we have them. some text positions could use a tiny bit of tweaking, ok. and viewports would allow to define an area in which scrolling would work, so that the right border of the text would be aligned to the richt border of the "now playing" bar, but that's only minor tweaks.

Perhaps I'm just a bit ignorant, but what exactly is this viewports thing? Is it just a way to make text on the wps screen aligned with x and y coordinates like the wps images?

ZincAlloy: Most ports really won't be needing Viewports because of the proper alignment of most text on most ports, but some of them can make the gap between the Next: line and the track name smaller and give them more room to breathe, but they're good as is right now...
